报告题目：Domestic Value-added in Exports and Firm Pollution Discharges: Evidence from China’s Manufacturing Sector （国内出口增加值与企业污染排放：基于中国制造业的实证）
This paper aims to investigate China’s domestic value added export and its relationship with environmental pollution. The study shows that the ratio of domestic value added exports over gross exports is negatively associated with firms’ pollution discharges. This relation is more profound in terms of general trade than processing trade. Further analysis illustrates that the observed negative effects are especially prevalent in eastern and central regions, technology-intensive industries, foreign-owned firms and new firms. In addition, it is shown that the negative relationship between value added exports and firms’ pollution discharges is stronger if government intervention is smaller, property rights protection is better and the tax burden is lighter.
报告题目：Political Turnover and Firm Pollution Discharges: An Empirical Study （地方官员换届与企业污染排放：实证分析）
This paper aims to examine the relationship between political turnover and pollution discharges by listed firms in China. The empirical results show that political turnover is associated with significantly more firm pollution discharges, particularly when the newly appointed officials are promoted locally. Furthermore, higher frequency of political turnover is linked with more pollution discharges. Lastly, our extended analysis illustrates that during the first year of an official in office polluting firms may rely on charitable donation rather than personal relationship to establish new political connections and seek protection for pollution. With the increase of the official’s tenure as well as the expansion in the social networks of the firms, personal relationship has more impact on the formation of political connections and hence the pollution behaviour of politically connected firms.
