Previously known as Department of Materials Science & Engineering, the School of Materials Science & Engineering in Hefei University of Technology has a history of more than 5 decades and has become one of the major bases in China for training elite professional talents in the fields of education, scientific research, application and development of structural material and new materials.
The school offers first-level discipline doctoral programs for Materials Science and Engineering, 5 second-level discipline doctoral programs for Materials Processing Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Composite Materials and Digital Materials Shaping as well as one postdoctoral research station for Materials Science and Engineering. It has 5 master degree programs in engineering for Materials Processing Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Composite Materials and Digital Materials Shaping and one master program of engineering for Materials Engineering, which makes it a school offering students on-the-job master degrees. Many of the aforementioned disciplines such as materials progressing engineering, materials science, materials physics and chemistry are key disciplines in Anhui Province. The school has 6 undergraduate majors, including Material Shaping and Control Engineering, Metallic Materials Engineering, Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Engineering, Materials Physics, Powder Material Science and Engineering and New Energy Materials and Devices. A complete higher education system from undergraduate program, master programs and doctoral program to post-doctoral studies has been in place.
The school has a faculty composed of educators with innovative ideas, rich teaching experiences and full devotion and responsibility. At present, it has 100 teaching and administrative staff members, 72 full-time teachers, including 24 professors and researchers, 35 associate professors, 15 doctoral supervisors, 55 master supervisors and over 30 teachers with overseas educational background. About 50 teachers have doctoral degrees and 95% of the teachers hold Master degrees. Teaching staffs in the school have advantageous competitiveness in education and science research. Four of the teachers are experts granted with special allowances from the State Council, three teachers are included in the Program for New Century Excellent Talents and over 20 teachers are provincial (ministerial) academic role models, academic backbone teachers, outstanding youths in scientific and technological fields in Anhui Province, Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Yangtze River and Huai River Area and prominent model teachers above provincial levels. Four of the professors are members of Advisor Committee of Professional Teaching in Ministry of Education. At present, the school has over 2,100 undergraduate students, over 350 postgraduate students, over 30 engineering postgraduate students and about 50 doctoral candidates. About 90% of the college graduates find employment right upon graduation.
The school is also equipped with various professional research centers, including Research Center for Copper Alloy and Forming Engineering, Key Laboratory for Mechanical Industrial Copper Alloy and Forming Engineering, Research Center for Nonferrous Metals Processing Engineering in Anhui Province and Key Laboratory for Powder Metallurgy in Anhui Province. In the recent 5 years, the school has earned 8 awards, including a second prize of natural science granted by Ministry of Education, a second prize of natural science granted by Anhui Province, three second prizes of science and technology granted by Anhui Province, four third prizes of scientific and technological progress granted by Anhui Province and a first prize of scientific and technological progress granted by the City of Hefei. Over 1,000 theses were published in the last five years, 470 of which were cited in the SCI and EI systems.
The school has been engaging in foreign exchange and collaboration and established sound and amicable mutual partnerships with many prestigious universities in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Australia, South Korea, Denmark, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, etc.. About 20 teachers and postgraduate students have been to these partnership nations for cooperative programs or for the pursuit of academic degrees. In recent years, the school has recruited 20 renowned scholars from both home and abroad as visiting professors and part-time professors and invited 40 renowned Chinese and foreign scholars to give lectures in the school.
