History and development
Shortly after the founding of the university, the Department of Basic Courses was set up to undertake the teaching of all the university’s public courses. In 1970s, Teaching Office for Marxism and Leninism was established to organize the teaching of public political theory at the university level.
In 1985, the School of Social Science and the undergraduate program of ideological and political education were set up based on Teaching Office for Marxism and Leninism. The school was authorized to confer master’s degree of ideological and political education in 1993.
In 1993, Teaching Office for Moral Education was incorporated into the School of Social Science. By now, the School of Social Science has undertaken all the teaching of public political theory at the university level.
In July 1997, the then Hefei University of Technology and the then Anhui Industry Institute were merged into a new Hefei University of Technology .The Schools of Social Science in the former Anhui Industry Institute and HFUT formed a new School of Social Science.
In June 1999, by restructuring departments based on discipline-groups, HFUT incorporated the School of Social Science and the School of Foreign Languages into the School of Humanities and Economics. In 2001, the disciplines of Marxist theory and ideological and political education were designated as provincial key disciplines. In 2004, they were authorized to confer master’s degree of Philosophy of Science and Technology.
In December 2007, HFUT decided to establish the School of Foreign Languages.
In November 2008, the basic theory of Marxism and ideological and political education were enlisted in the third batch of Anhui key disciplines.
In February 2010, upon the instructions of the Ministry of Education, the School of Marxism was officially set up.
Faculty and Stuff
There are 78 excellent faculties in our school, comprising 12 professors, 36 assistant professors, 26 teachers with doctoral degrees, 9 Ph.D candidates, 1member of education steering committee for national college ideological and political theory course,1granted with the first national top 100 “two courses” teachers, 1teacher given the titles of national awards for top teachers and national college top ideological and political theory teachers, 1doctoral supervisor, 10 winners of Anhui provincial awards for top teachers, etc. All the teachers under 45 have master’s degrees.

According to the scope of the first-tier discipline of Marxist theory, the school developed 6 research directions, running the second-tier discipline of Philosophy of Science and Technology for Master program, and offering undergraduate programs of Ideological and Political Education.
The school has published more than 500 papers and 20 monographs. It has undertaken more than 100 research programs at different levels, including 5 programs of National Social Science Fund and 52 programs in Social Science of the Ministry of Education and has won more than 50 prizes at different levels. There are 1 National Excellent Course and 3 Provincial Excellent Courses.
In recent years, the school has been boosting the overall teaching and education quality of ideological and political theory courses as well as the scientific research of Marxist theory by focusing on teaching, prioritizing discipline development, relying on scientific research and emphasizing team building.
