Students from Xuancheng Campus, HFUT swept the Mathematical Contest in Modeling / Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM 2015).

Xuancheng campus sent 21 students in 7 teams to attend the contests, with two of them winning Meritorious Winners and four of them winning Honorable Mentions.

MCM/ICM Contest is an international mathematical contest for college undergraduates organized by COMAP （the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications）under the sponsorship of SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), NSA (National Security Agency), INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) and MAA (Mathematical Association of America).

MCM/ICM 2015 has attracted over 10,000 teams from five continents. 15% of the students were awarded Meritorious Winners and 25% won Honorable Mentions.

Normally held before or after Chinese Spring Festival, MCM/ICM sheds lights on the hot topics in the scientific researches in the world. It is required that three students should turn in an English thesis containing a hypothesis, establishment and solution of mathematic modeling targeted at the specific topic by collecting materials, conducting surveys and utilizing tools like PC, mathematical software and the Internet.

With focus on research, innovation, teamwork, communication and defense of the results, MCM/ICM has already become the most famous international contest for college students. It has even become an indicator of student’s quality and skills by many renowned research institutes and companies around the world.

The smashing success of the students from Xuancheng Campus is inseparable from the immense support from leaders and teachers. There has been a complete set of procedures ranging from selection, training and management of the students. Vice President Du Dayong also visited the contestants as the contest this year fell on the winter vacation.
